April 2026 Wrap Up

Miss me? I’ve been kind of MIA the last part of this month (thank you essays) but I did still manage to get some reading done!

Overview from the Storygraph

You can really see evidence of a re-read binge in the middle of the month there…

Books Read

Despite being pretty awful at blogging this month, I did do a decent amount of reading – helped out by a trusty Ilona Andrews reread session. I also read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy books this month – which I’m definitely not complaining about!

  • This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews (Maggie the Undying #1) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 (Review)
  • A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Review)
  • The Apothecary Diaries (Light Novel) Vol. 2 by Natsu Hyuuga | ⭐⭐⭐.5
  • Paladin’s Grace by T. Kingfisher (Saint of Steel #1) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Death and the Gardener by Georgi Gospodinov | ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 (Review)
  • If We Cannot Go At the Speed of Light by Kim Choyeop | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Review)

I also reread all of the books that are currently out in Ilona Andrews’ Innkeeper Chronicles series:

  • Clean Sweep (#1) ⭐⭐⭐.5
  • Sweep in Peace (#2) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • One Fell Sweep (#3) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Sweep of the Blade (#4) ⭐⭐⭐.5
  • Sweep With Me (#4.5 Novella) ⭐⭐⭐.5
  • Sweep of the Heart (#5) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Books Progressed or DNF’d

I also read one more short story from the Korean short story collection I’ve been reading for the past 8 months or so, as well as the first half of Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries. I started doing some dissertation reading in Herself An Author but didn’t do as much as I had hoped, so that will have to be a focus for my May TBR.

Finally, I started reading The Witch and got about 40% in to the book before I just couldn’t deal with it anymore and decided to DNF. The main character was extremely frustrating with illogical behaviour that was clearly a cry for help but which never seemed to get addressed, the fat phobia was rampant and I was just not enjoying anything about the book. Especially I’ve found recently that due to things in my personal life, I’m very sensitive about children (especially adult children)’s reactions to their parents’ divorce and this was just not in any way a healthy reaction…. You can find my review of The Witch here.

On the Blog

I did really well at the beginning of the month before pretty much dropping of the face of the blogging world thanks to a holiday and three essays that I had to write. I’m hoping to bring back the energy of the beginning of April in May though, so please look forward to the many fun posts I have planned.

Song of the Month

To finish off the wrap up, here is what I’ve been listening to this month:

I listened to a lot of the band Xdinary Heroes this month – partially because they released a new album and partially because I managed to get tickets to go to there concert at the start of June.

For a bit of a different vibe, I’ve also been enjoying AKMU’s new album.

What was your favourite book of the month?

If you did a wrap up post of your feel free to link it in the comments and I’ll check it out!

I really need to jump back into the Innkeeper chronicles at some point. Sometimes rereading is just really needed!

Absolutely! I will say IA is pretty good at recapping in the beginning of each book the key stuff you need to know so I never feel like I need to reread in order to keep reading but IA’s books are such comfort reads for me that I definitely rotate between rereading each of their series xD

Sometimes life just gets in the way! Although a holiday sounds like the best reason to take a break from blogging!

    Hope you’re enjoying Emily Wilde!

It’s a pretty good excuse although I was only gone for five days, but it meant I had no time before or after since I went in the middle of essay deadlines (not a great time to go, admittedly, but I had an exam to take in York and decided to spend a couple days in the area).

I was also really drawn to it and even preordered it but ended up being really disappointed. I recommend reading through some positive and negative reviews before getting it or trying to borrow it from the library as I’m definitely not the only one who didn’t enjoy it!

Funnily enough, I picked the Innkeeper books back up in April and reread the first one so I can continue the series! Funny when there’s synchronicity like that.

Looks like you picked up a good amount of fantasy. I’m so glad you enjoyed Sangu Mandanna’s book. It is one of my favorites. I’ve been meaning to read Paladin’s Grace. T. Kingfisher is one of those authors who has written so many books, I feel like I am always playing catch up. I hope you are afforded more time in May for the blog.

I wasn’t sure whether I would like it before reading since I’ve had a lot of misses with ‘cozy fantasy’, so I waited for months to get it from the library instead. And now I definitely need a copy, although I’m going to wait a bit and get it when the paperback comes out! Kingfisher has so many books – I’ve only read two so far but I definitely need to read more.

Sounds like a great reading month! Rereads can be such cozy (and quick!) books to pick up.

I love rereading a good book – I’m always more wary if it’s been a long time since I first read it though, as sometimes I end up having a completely different reaction the second time around. Especially if it’s a book I read as a teenager.

Omg I hope you have the best time at the Xdinary Heroes concert! I like some of their songs but haven’t listened to them much lately, should probably go check out their recent album. My favourite book of April is probably Edge of Steel, which is the sequel to Clash of Claws. I adore the characters and the world and am no back to impatiently waiting for the final book of the trilogy. Hope you have a lovely May!

It sounds like an interesting series, although I hear there’s quite a lot of jealousy at least in book 1? Does that get better in book 2?

Thanks so much – I also hope I love it. Also, your comment reminded me that I’m yet to book flights to London so I should probably get on that ASAP before the prices spike.

      Have a great May!

Hmm the jealousy gets better towards the end of book 2, to be fair the jealousy wasn’t too bad in book 1 if I remember right. Book 2 for uh various reasons is probs where it’s at its peak but I didn’t mind it too much. If you’re after something fun with a kickass heroine and don’t mind why choose reverse harem then you could give it a go. It was my first introduction to those niches and whilst there is spice, I think I did read some of the spice in book 1 and skim read it in book 2?

Omg yes you should! Save your money where possible! You too!

I’ll put it on the under consideration list hehe. I don’t mind reverse harem, but I tend to prefer a little less jealousy (or next to none) hehe.
