March 2026 Wrap Up

The first quarter of the year is already over, can you believe it? I had a pretty successful reading month in March, so let’s take a look at what I’ve been reading, posting and listening to!

Overview from the Storygraph

I gave five books four stars this month, so the “highest rated reads” here doesn’t necessarily represent my top three for the month – I’m not actually entirely sure what my top three would be! They’re just the three most recent 4 stars I gave.

I was a lot more consistent with reading this month than in Jan/Feb, so I’m very happy with that.

Books Read

I read 10 books this month, which is slightly insane, although to be fair at least half of them were very short audiobooks, so I guess that makes sense. Still, I also had a pretty high average rating, so that makes me very happy that I got to read so many good books this month.

Books Progressed or DNF’d

Aside from the ten books that I finished, I also made progress in quite a few others.

Death and the Gardner is an ongoing buddy read with a friend, and we’re a third of the way through. I also finished the short story that I was reading from 이상한 나라의 스물셋 [The Strange Land of 23], so I’ve now only got three stories left until the end.

I did some reading for an essay on the soundscapes of the woman’s boudoir poem in Ming dynasty China, so I read the Ming section of Women Writers of Traditional China. I did mark some poems I want to go back and read in more detail when it comes to writing my dissertation, but I did read all the poems in the section, so I’m counting that section as complete.

Finally, I’m slowly working my way though Save the Cat! Writes A Novel when I have some creative writing time, but it’s on and off my paused list since I don’t really have a lot of time for that at the moment. I read about 3% of the book this month, so not very much, but I am taking notes whilst reading.

I did DNF or soft DNF two books this month. Fuchsia War by Gaia Kai was an ARC, but the writing style really bugged me, so in the end I decided not to continue reading. I didn’t provide a full review on the blog since I didn’t read past the first couple of chapters. The Elsewhere Express is more of a soft DNF. I don’t know whether I might pick it up again later, so I’m probably going to sit with it paused for a bit, but I’m leaning towards DNFing. I don’t think it’s a bad book but there’s just quite a few things that don’t click about it for me, and I’ve been reading other positive and negative reviews and I don’t think that’s likely to change. We’ll see though.

On the Blog

I had a bit of a dip in the middle of the month, but otherwise I think I did a pretty good job of posting this month and I definitely got out more book reviews than I often do. One thing I do want to do next month, though, is participate in the Fantasy with Friends and Let’s Talk Bookish memes, since I keep meaning to do them and running out of time to write the posts.

Around the Blogosphere

Song of the Month

To finish off the wrap up, here is what I’ve been listening to this month:

Quite a few BTS songs in the top ten – I listened to the album a couple of times figuring out which songs to download.

I wouldn’t necessarily say those were my favourite songs of the month, so let me share two of my favourites that didn’t make the top 10!

X room is a single by Xdinary Heroes that probably would have made it to my top ten except it came out on the 25th. And Blue Bird is an old favourite.

What was your favourite book of the month?

If you did a wrap up post of your feel free to link it in the comments and I’ll check it out!

    Fabulous month!
Not too good for me, exceptionally: https://wordsandpeace.com/2026/03/31/2026-march-wrap-up/

It’s definitely the most consistent I’ve been with my reading in a while!

I’ve not read it, but I’ve mostly heard middling things about The Elsewhere Express (similarly to her book Water Moon last year, which also seemed to end up as middling!).

I did enjoy Water Moon quite a bit this year, but this one doesn’t seem to be doing as much for me. The setting is still magical and beautiful but feels much less immersive and I’m apprehensive about the characters. The character I liked most at the beginning I’ve read some things about that I think I will find frustrating, and I’m definitely finding the other character slightly frustrating too. Also there’s quite a dark twist that people talk about as if it’s not dark at all, which isn’t my preference. I’m only at about 15% but I think unless someone convinces me otherwise, I’ll be DNFing.

I’ve also heard mixed things about The Elsewhere Express. I still want to read it, but my expectations for the book are nowhere near as high as when I first read about it.

It’s kind of a shame because I actually did like the very beginning and I also liked the previous book. Which makes me think that maybe I’m just not in the mood? But I think it’s mostly the vibes and the characters that just feel a bit off for me. I don’t necessarily think they’re done badly though, so I think a lot of people who enjoy a slightly psychological twist and slightly frustrating (but well-flawed) characters might still really enjoy the book. It just doesn’t feel entertaining for me, and that’s what I was wanting from the book.

It can be really hard to tell if it’s the book not working for you or just your current mood!

Snap with 10 books! You had some great reads.
I love the title for ‘The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly’, I might have to check it out.

Thank you! It’s quite a fable-like story, so if that’s your thing then I do recommend!

It’s definitely sometimes best to just drop a book if it’s not gelling!

I should give the Let’s Talk Bookish topics a try… having so much more free time this year makes it a lot easier to do that kind of thing, but I really ought to work on pre-writing some more posts too.

Absolutely. I decided to file it as a DNF in the end – I’ve got too many books to be giving eh books a second chance. My building has a book swap thing and although there aren’t any books there that I’m interested in (and I think half of them are ones I added there), I might just leave it there since unfortunately, I wrote on a couple of pages. I should probably have a “read at least 15% before starting to annotate” rule just in case hehe.

Definitely have a look at the topics for this month, there are some good ones. I just posted one earlier today and it was lots of fun. They also give lots of subquestions, which I like, because it gives me a sort of premade structure for my post so I can write out a brief discussion much more quickly!

You read a lot of books in March! Of yours, I’ve read the Claire Keegan novel and thought it was quietly powerful.

It was a pretty decent reading month, although a lot of them were shorter audiobooks that I read walking to work and class. I would agree with that assessment of the Claire Keegan novella – I might try some other things by her in the future. If you enjoyed it, I also read Show Me Where It Hurts by Claire Gleeson (so many Claires!) last month, which I thought had a similar mood.

I put Elsewhere Express down and then had 0 interest in picking it back up.

    Also yeay for Murderbot.

I ended up just completely putting it down and giving it away to a friend in the end – I don’t think it was necessarily a bad book, I just don’t think I’m interested in picking it up again.
I’m waiting (somewhat patiently) for my hold to come through on the next Murderbot book. It would be really cool if I could get caught up this year…
