Top ten books on my autumn TBR

Top ten books on my autumn TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish meme originally created by The Broke and the Bookish and currently hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Since autumn has now started, the topic for this book is the top ten books on your autumn TBR list. I have a mix here of some books I want to read for my degree, books I’ve already started and books that are on my priority list for 2025, so without further ado – let’s take a look!

I like to read a couple of fantasy romance books for fun each season. Even though I’m not really feeling my current one (Modern Divination), I’m still hopeful I can find a couple to enjoy this season. A good contender at the moment is Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries, since it’s one of the few books I brought with me when I moved to do my master’s degree. There’s also 검을 든 꽃 [Flower Wielding a Sword] which I have started reading – but this one isn’t the kind of quick read that fantasy romances usually are for me, since I’m reading it in Korean which just takes me longer.

I am determined to read Green Island in the year that I lived in Taiwan since it’s about Taiwan, so I’ve not got much time left to get that done, which means it needs to be pretty high up the reading list. I also still haven’t started the book for the readalong I’m doing with my friends, so The Master and Margarita will also need to be a priority.

The August Sleepwalker is an early collection of the Chinese poet Bei Dao’s poetry translated into English. I have to give a presentation on Bei Dao this term, so I’ll be reading some of the poems for that, but I also just really enjoy what I have read of his work so far, so I’m looking forward to reading more. Teachers of the Inner Chambers is about women in 17th Century China and is also for my degree, although this one isn’t for a specific class, it’s just reading for my dissertation.

One of my goals for this year was to read at least two books on creative writing and I haven’t even read one yet, so that’s definitely something that needs addressing. I think one of the more likely books for me get around to reading will be Jessica Brody’s Save the Cat! Writes A Novel. Another of my goals that I’m sorely behind on is reading 24 Korean short stories – I’ve pretty much given up on catching up with that one, but I would like to finish the short story collection that I’m currently reading at least, which 이상한 나라의 스물셋 [The Strange World of 23].

Finally, we have two books that I’m quite anticipating. Return to the Dallergut Dream Department Store came out last year, but I never had the book with me and the library didn’t have a copy when I was in Taiwan either so I haven’t had a chance to read it, despite enjoying the first book. Perhaps even more excitingly (and hopefully not disappointingly) is The Second Death of Locke – I’ve been really intrigued by this book since I first heard about it and it came out today, so I’m going to try and get my hands on it ASAP.

Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think?

What are your priority reads for autumn this year?

One of the most famous poems from it is “The Answer” – I recommend looking it up!

I have The Master and The Margarita but I haven’t tried it yet because it’s so daunting and I haven’t read any other Russian Classics so I feel like I won’t get it lol I love the cover for The Strange World short story collection! I also want to read The Second Death of Locke. I hope you enjoy all of your reads 🙂 Here’s my TTT this week.

I’m in a similar position with TM&M, and my friend who I’m reading it “with” (I’m so far behind I don’t know whether it can be classified as “with” anymore) said there’s also a huge number of biblical references, so I’m afraid that will go over my head as well. The cover for The Strange World of 23 really is so… appealing! It definitely caught my eye in the bookshop. Hope you have a good autumn reading season as well!
